ASICS Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation producing sportswear, footwear, and accessories. The name is an acronym for the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano ("a sound mind, in a sound body"). Asics is headquartered in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The company traces its origin to January 1, 1949, when Kihachiro Onitsuka established Onitsuka Co., Ltd. in Kobe to manufacture basketball shoes. In 1977, Onitsuka Tiger merged with fishing and sporting goods company GTO and athletic uniform maker Jelenk to form ASICS Corporation. Net sales were ¥570.4 billion in FY2023, with net income of ¥35.2 billion. Revenue breakdown: 50% performance running shoes, 33% other footwear, 6% apparel and equipment, 11% Onitsuka Tiger. Geographic distribution: 16% Japan, 21% North America, 27% Europe, 14% China, 21% other regions.
Asics' design language is bifurcated: the performance brand focuses on technical engineering (the GEL cushioning system, precision fit) with surface design serving functional differentiation through colourway and identification; the lifestyle/heritage brands (Onitsuka Tiger, Asics Tiger) focus on archival visual identity recovery and cultural resonance. The Tiger Stripes motif is the single most commercially important surface design asset in the company's portfolio and the primary visual differentiator across global markets.
Onitsuka Tiger became particularly known for the Mexico 66 design, which introduced the distinctive crossed Tiger Stripes - now the brand's visual signature. Martial artist Bruce Lee wore and helped popularise the shoe internationally. Despite the ASICS Corporation name change in 1977, the Onitsuka Tiger label continues in production for the vintage and lifestyle market. In 2015, Asics launched Asics Tiger, a lifestyle brand focused on sportswear inspired by the company's designs from the 1970s to 1990s. Asics acquired Swedish outdoor brand Haglöfs for ¥11.4 billion ($128.7 million) in July 2010; Haglöfs was sold to LionRock Capital in December 2023. The fitness app Runkeeper was acquired in February 2016. In March 2021, Asics launched Unoha - a Japan-focused women's lifestyle brand using organic and environmentally-friendly materials - but discontinued it in June 2024 after approximately three years. A significant historical connection: Nike, Inc. (originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports) was founded by Phil Knight to sell Onitsuka Tiger shoes in the US after Knight visited Onitsuka's office in 1963; the commercial relationship eventually broke down into litigation, with Nike retaining naming rights to several models.
Footwear: performance running shoes (Gel-Kinsei, Gel-Kayano, Gel-Pulse, Gel-Cumulus series), tennis footwear, trail running, wrestling shoes, lifestyle sneakers (Onitsuka Tiger range including Mexico 66). Apparel: T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, swimwear, compression garments, leggings, socks. Accessories: bags, backpacks, caps.
Asics operates company-owned retail stores internationally (store in Boston on Newbury Street documented; Hong Kong and other Asian flagship stores), alongside wholesale to sporting goods retailers. The US retail store operation under Windsor Financial Group LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2016 amid a legal dispute with Asics. Haglöfs operated as a subsidiary until sold to LionRock Capital in December 2023. Runkeeper (fitness app, acquired 2016) was a digital extension of the brand's run-focused market position.
Asics competes primarily in the performance running market - 50% of company income comes from performance running shoes - alongside a significant lifestyle/heritage market through Onitsuka Tiger (11% of revenue). The Onitsuka Tiger brand carries substantial cultural capital, particularly in Asia and fashion-adjacent streetwear markets. Asics has been the official sportswear partner of the Japanese Olympic Committee and official kit manufacturer for Cricket Australia. Key endorsement relationships include tennis players Novak Djokovic and others from the global tennis circuit, supported by a long-term World Athletics sponsorship.
Asics' relevance to surface pattern design is concentrated in the brand's iconic graphic vocabulary and its approach to footwear surface design:
