Authentic Brands Group LLC (Authentic) is an American sports, media, entertainment and lifestyle platform headquartered in New York City. Founded in 2010 by Jamie Salter - a Canadian entrepreneur known for co-founding Ride Inc. (a publicly traded snowboard company) and serving as CEO of Hilco Consumer Capital - Authentic's founding capital of $250 million came primarily from Leonard Green & Partners. The company's model is to acquire brand IP and celebrity likeness rights, then license those assets to operating partners around the world rather than operating manufacturing, retail, or distribution directly. The portfolio has grown to more than 50 consumer brands across fashion, athletics, entertainment, and home. Total annual retail sales across the licensed portfolio reached approximately $38 billion globally following the January 2026 acquisition of a majority stake in Guess. CEO Matt Maddox was appointed in May 2026; Salter continues as Executive Chairman and founder.
Authentic Brands Group has no proprietary design direction. All creative decisions are made by the operating partners who license the brands. The company's role is IP management, brand equity maintenance, and licensing deal structuring. The founder's background at Ride Inc. (snowboard company) may inform the affinity for action sports culture evident in the Boardriders/Volcom acquisitions.
Authentic's first acquisitions were clothing brands Silver Star and Tapout in 2010, followed by rights to Marilyn Monroe's likeness in January 2011. Accelerated portfolio growth from 2013 included Juicy Couture ($195 million from Fifth & Pacific), the Muhammad Ali estate, and an 85% stake in Elvis Presley Enterprises. Subsequent acquisitions across the 2010s covered Nautica (from VF Corporation, 2018), Nine West (2018), Camuto Group (with DSW, 2018), home brands Drexel, Henredon, and Thomasville (all 2018), Sports Illustrated ($110 million, 2019), Volcom (from Kering, 2019), Barneys New York (2019), Brooks Brothers (2020, with Simon Property Group), Forever 21 (2020), Lucky Brand Jeans (2020). In 2021, Reebok was acquired from Adidas for at least $2.5 billion (completed Q1 2022); Izod, Van Heusen, Arrow, and Geoffrey Beene were acquired from PVH for $220 million; Eddie Bauer was added. The 2023 Boardriders acquisition ($1.25 billion) brought Quiksilver, Billabong, Roxy, RVCA, DC Shoes, Element Skateboards, Von Zipper, and Honolua into the portfolio. Champion was acquired from Hanesbrands for $1.2 billion in 2024; Sperry (from Wolverine World Wide, licensed to Aldo Group) and Ted Baker (acquired 2022) completed the footwear expansion. Dockers was acquired from Levi Strauss for $311 million in May 2025. A majority stake in Guess was completed in January 2026 (valuing Guess at approximately $1.4 billion). Lee Jeans was announced in May 2026 from Kontoor Brands for $750 million. CVC Capital Partners and HPS Investment Partners invested $3.5 billion in November 2021 at a $12.7 billion company valuation. Sports Illustrated was acquired 2019, experienced operator turmoil (Arena Group licence terminated January 2024), and was relicensed to Minute Media in March 2024. In 2025, Authentic launched Authentic Live, an in-person events division.
Authentic does not manufacture or retail directly. Products across its licensed brands span clothing, footwear, accessories, jewellery, fragrance, eyewear, swimwear, lingerie, and kidswear. Home categories include furniture (Thomasville, Henredon, Drexel). Sports media: Sports Illustrated. Sportswear and performance: Reebok, Champion, Spyder, Eddie Bauer. Surf/skate: Billabong, Quiksilver, Roxy, RVCA, DC Shoes, Element Skateboards, Volcom, Von Zipper. Fashion: Brooks Brothers, Nautica, Juicy Couture, Ted Baker, Guess, Hervé Léger, Jones New York, Lucky Brand Jeans, Geoffrey Beene, Van Heusen, Arrow, Izod. Footwear: Nine West, Sperry, Rockport, Vince Camuto, Bandolino. Denim: Guess, Dockers, Lee Jeans (from 2026), Lucky Brand Jeans.
The core business model: Authentic acquires brand IP, licenses it to operating partners who handle all manufacturing, retail, and distribution. Reebok is licensed globally to multiple partners. Sperry was acquired and simultaneously licensed to the Aldo Group for North American operations. Brooks Brothers continues operating retail under the co-ownership arrangement with Simon Property Group. Sports Illustrated is licensed to Minute Media for editorial publishing (from March 2024). The planned IPO - filed at $1.5 billion in July 2021, withdrawn November 2021 in favour of private sale at $12.7 billion valuation - was positioned for 2023 or 2024. The Authentic Live events division (launched 2025) represents a direct consumer engagement capability alongside the licensing platform.
Authentic Brands Group is one of the largest brand licensing companies in the world by portfolio volume and total retail sales. The business model - acquiring IP and licensing to operating partners - insulates Authentic from direct operational risk (inventory, retail, manufacturing) while allowing brand value to be leveraged across multiple product categories and geographies simultaneously. The model was developed in part from Salter's prior experience at Hilco Consumer Capital. Authentic's portfolio spans mass-market (Champion, Aéropostale, Forever 21), premium casual (Nautica, Brooks Brothers, Lucky Brand Jeans), active/sport (Reebok, Champion, Spyder), surf/skate (Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, Roxy, DC Shoes, Element), celebrity (Muhammad Ali, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, David Beckham, Shaquille O'Neal), and home (Thomasville, Henredon, Drexel). The company operates in sports media through its Sports Illustrated ownership and in live events through Authentic Live.
Authentic Brands Group is, by portfolio scale, one of the most significant holders of fashion brand IP in the world - and several of its brands carry strongly defined surface pattern and graphic design identities:
