The house closed in 1968 and was revived in 1986. Kering (then Gucci Group/PPR) acquired a controlling stake in 2001. Estimated revenue reached approximately $2 billion in 2022. Balenciaga's design identity has shifted significantly across creative directors. Cristóbal Balenciaga's founding language was architectural silhouette and structural fabric manipulation. Nicolas Ghesquière's tenure (1997-2012) modernised the silhouette through body-garment tension and introduced commercial accessories. Alexander Wang (2013-2015) brought sportswear influence. Demna Gvasalia (2015-2025) pursued conceptual deconstructivism, trompe-l'œil surface illusion, logo saturation, and luxury-meets-irony positioning - resulting in the brand's highest commercial performance period. Pierpaolo Piccioli (from July 2025) brings a haute couture and haute artisanal background from his long tenure at Valentino.
Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastián in 1917, expanding to Madrid and Barcelona. The Spanish Civil War forced the closure of his Spanish operations; he relocated to Paris and opened his couture house on Avenue George V in August 1937. The first Paris collection was heavily influenced by the Spanish Renaissance. Within two years the press described him as a revolutionary. Clients included the Spanish Royal Family, Bunny Mellon, Marella Agnelli, Gloria Guinness, Mona von Bismarck, Jackie Kennedy, and Queen Fabiola of Belgium (wedding dress, 1960).
Cristóbal Balenciaga closed the house in 1968 and died in 1972. Nephews ran the brand briefly before it passed to the Hoechst chemical group (1978). Jacques Bogart acquired Balenciaga in 1986 and launched a ready-to-wear line in 1987. Nicolas Ghesquière was appointed artistic director in 1997, modernising the house while preserving its silhouette-centric identity, and introduced the Motorcycle bag - the brand's first iconic handbag. The Gucci Group acquired a controlling stake in 2001. Alexander Wang served as creative director 2013-2015. Demna Gvasalia was appointed in October 2015 and remained until 2025, before moving to Gucci. Pierpaolo Piccioli became creative director in July 2025.

Balenciaga is a global luxury fashion house within the Kering portfolio, which also includes Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, Brioni, Boucheron, and others. The brand occupies the avant-garde luxury segment, known for experimental silhouettes, deconstructivist aesthetics, and provocative commercial strategies. Under Demna Gvasalia, the brand's commercial position strengthened significantly, with analysts estimating approximately $2 billion in revenue by 2022.
Founding silhouette construction: Cristóbal Balenciaga's core contribution to fashion was not print but structural surface: the cocoon coat (1957), balloon jacket (1953), balloon skirt (1957), baby doll dress (1957), sack dress (1957), chemise dress (1958), and Empire line (1959) all redefined the relationship between fabric surface and the body. In the 1960s, his work shifted toward heavy fabrics, intricate embroidery, and bold surface materials - including his signature "collars that stood away from the collarbone."
Trompe-l'œil surface design: In September 2021, Balenciaga released trompe-l'œil sweatpants printed with the illusion of plaid boxer shorts emerging from the waistband, priced at $1,190. This is a documented surface design technique - printed illusion applied directly to garment surface.
Adidas collaboration: The 2022 "Garde-Robe" campaign was produced in collaboration with Adidas, representing a co-branded sportswear surface design programme.
Lunaform plant-based leather: In 2023, Balenciaga was awarded PETA's prize for best luxury product for a vegan coat made from Lunaform, a plant-based leather material - a documented technical surface material innovation.
Fragrance surface licensing: Coty holds the Balenciaga fragrance licence, producing namesake fragrances under the brand identity.
Ukrainian flag T-shirts: At the March 2022 Paris Fashion Week show, Balenciaga placed yellow and blue T-shirts (referencing the Ukrainian flag) on show chairs - a deliberate use of graphic surface design as political statement.
Spanish Renaissance embroidery: Cristóbal Balenciaga's first Paris collection (1937) drew on Spanish Renaissance design, including embroidery and richly surfaced fabrics from the Spanish decorative tradition.
