Bebe Stores, Inc. (stylised as "bebe") is an American women's retail brand established in 1976 by Iranian-American entrepreneur Manny Mashouf, who opened the first Bebe store on Polk Street in San Francisco at a time when the women's wear market was dominated by junior, bridge, and misses categories. The company name derives from Shakespeare's Hamlet ("To be or not to be"); the company traded as "Babe, Inc." until its 1998 IPO. Bebe develops and produces women's apparel, accessories, and fragrances, marketed under the Bebe, Bebe Sport, and Bebe Outlet names. Mashouf owned approximately 55-59% of the company until 2015. On 21 April 2017, Bebe announced the closure of all remaining 168-175 brick-and-mortar locations to operate exclusively as an e-commerce brand. The brand has since operated online and through international franchise stores via a partnership with Global Brands Group from June 2017. In May 2020, Centric Brands (the Bebe licensee) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, listing Centric Bebe LLC as an entity in the filing.
No documented design director or named creative lead in source material beyond the president-level oversight of design by Emilia Fabricant (2010-2012). The brand's design identity - "sexy contemporary" with emphasis on body-conscious cut, embellishment, and trend-responsive print - was driven by the US women's wear market positioning rather than a single named creative voice. The celebrity endorsement strategy (Rebecca Romijn, Eva Longoria, Bebe Rexha) defined the brand's public aesthetic register.
Mashouf's founding concept targeted a gap in women's contemporary fashion. At its peak, Bebe operated 312 stores: 215 core Bebe stores, 32 2b Bebe outlet stores, 64 BebeSport locations (including 2-in-1 Bebe/BebeSport stores), and one standalone accessories store. Stores were located across the US, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Canada, with international operations in Lebanon, Kuwait, Egypt, Israel, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, and the UAE. BebeSport launched in 2003, focused on active lifestyle sportswear; the BebeSport stores were converted to PH8 stores in November 2009, with BebeSport product absorbed into Bebe and 2b Bebe stores. PH8 offered casual weekend apparel, workout attire, and accessories. The 2b Bebe outlet division sold clearance merchandise, logo merchandise, and special cuts produced exclusively for the outlet format. In 2012, Bebe launched a bridal wear line designed by Project Runway finalist Rami Kashou; the line was withdrawn after poor sales. The company hired Emilia Fabricant as president in 2010 (left 2012 for Aéropostale); Steve Birkhold (former US CEO of Diesel Jeans and CEO of Lacoste) succeeded as CEO before resigning in 2014; Jim Wiggett was named CEO in December 2014. In January 2019, the brand relaunched its e-commerce platform with a revamped loyalty program.
Women's apparel (tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, activewear, matching sets), footwear, accessories, bags, watches, eyewear, and fragrance. Historical sub-line categories: BebeSport/PH8 (active lifestyle), 2b Bebe (clearance and logo merchandise), bridal (2012, discontinued).
Bebe closed all 168-175 physical US stores in April-May 2017. From June 2017, the brand operated through a partnership with Global Brands Group for e-commerce and international stores. A new NYC lifestyle concept store opened in March 2018. From January 2019, a revamped e-commerce platform and loyalty program operated through Branded Online. Centric Brands (Bebe licensee) filed for Chapter 11 in May 2020, with Centric Bebe LLC named as an entity in the bankruptcy. Eyewear continues under a separate licence (store locator references prescription eyewear locations, as of 2026).
Bebe occupied the "sexy contemporary" segment of American women's fashion - a market positioning built on figure-conscious, embellished, and trend-driven apparel at accessible price points, primarily targeting women aged 18-35. The brand's marketing strategy relied heavily on celebrity endorsement: Mischa Barton (2006), Rebecca Romijn and Eva Longoria (2007-2009), Brenda Song (2007), and Bebe Rexha (2019's "Bebe loves Bebe" body-positive campaign). The 2009 spring campaign was photographed by Camilla Åkrans, styled by Julia von Boehm, and placed in Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour. At its peak, Bebe's brand was built on in-store collection preview events as both retail and brand-building exercises.
Bebe's primary commercial relevance to surface pattern design is through its in-house design function and the "sexy contemporary" product aesthetic:
