Billabong is an Australian surf and boardsports brand founded in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant in Gold Coast, Queensland. The brand name derives from the Wiradjuri word bilabaŋ (a creek that runs only during the rainy season). The Merchants began by designing and hand-making board shorts at home, selling to local surf shops; Rena Merchant's triple-stitching technique established a product durability reputation that drove early expansion. Billabong listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in August 2000. Following a complex financial distress and acquisition period (2012-2014), it became part of Boardriders Inc. (2018), which was then acquired by Authentic Brands Group in September 2023 for US$1.25 billion.

Billabong's design language is surf-culture-derived: tropical, graphic, seasonal print. Board shorts represent the brand's most visible surface design product. Broader activewear and lifestyle ranges follow seasonal colourway cycles. RVCA (within the Boardriders/ABG portfolio) represents the more art-directed, graphic-print end of the combined brand portfolio.
The Billabong brand portfolio expanded significantly through the 2000s: Von Zipper eyewear (2001), Element Skateboards (2001), Kustom footwear/Palmers Surf (2004), Nixon watches (2005), Xcel wetsuits (2007), Tigerlily womenswear (2007), RVCA (2010), Sector 9 skateboards, and DaKine accessories. Revenue reached A$1.7 billion in 2011 (from A$225 million at the 2000 float). A sharp decline followed: an A$859.5 million loss in fiscal 2013 led to board restructuring, multiple failed takeover bids (TPG Capital, Altamont, Centerbridge/Oaktree), and eventual Centerbridge/Oaktree recapitalisation in 2014. The brand returned to profitability in 2015. In 2018, Billabong International was acquired by Boardriders Inc. (the Quiksilver parent). Boardriders passed to Authentic Brands Group in September 2023. In February 2025, Liberated Brands - the US operator of Billabong retail locations - filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed all US stores; brand ownership remains with ABG.

Billabong operates internationally through billabong.com and wholesale. US retail operations collapsed with Liberated Brands (February 2025); brand ownership and international distribution remain with Authentic Brands Group. The brand sits within ABG's Boardriders portfolio alongside Quiksilver, Roxy, RVCA, DC Shoes, Element, Von Zipper, and Honolua.
Billabong holds a heritage position in global surfwear alongside Quiksilver and Roxy (also ABG/Boardriders brands). The brand targets the boardsports and action-sports lifestyle market across surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding with a seasonal clothing and accessories range.
Billabong's core product - board shorts - is a primary vehicle for seasonal graphic print and surface design. The brand's pattern vocabulary spans tropical prints, stripe variations, abstract surf graphics, and logo-driven surface treatments applied to boardshorts, T-shirts, wetsuits, and swimwear. Seasonal colourway and print development are central to the surfwear production cycle. Expansion into womenswear via Tigerlily and skate-adjacent brands (Element, RVCA) broadened the SPD surface vocabulary to include fashion-forward print and graphic tees with applied surface design.
