Cartier is a French luxury goods brand founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier (1819-1904), who took over the workshop of his master, Adolphe Picard. Internationally recognised as one of the most prestigious manufacturers of jewellery, watches, leather goods, eyewear, and accessories, Cartier held royal warrants from multiple European courts by the early 20th century - King Edward VII described it as "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers." Cartier is headquartered in Paris and is a subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont Group. It operates 200-plus stores in 125 countries, with three Temples (Historical Maisons) in Paris, London, and New York City.
Forbes (2020): brand value $12.2 billion; revenue $6.2 billion; ranked 56th Most Valuable Brand globally.

Cartier's design language is rooted in Paris fine jewellery and watchmaking craft. The Panther, the Santos (functional aviation-instrument square bezel), the Tank (geometric rectangular case), the Love bracelet (screw-device surface lock), and the Tutti Frutti palette constitute the brand's enduring design vocabulary - each simultaneously a product silhouette, a surface treatment, and a motif system. The Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain (from 1984) reflects the brand's sustained engagement with contemporary visual art.
Louis-François Cartier founded the firm in 1847. His son Alfred took over in 1874. Alfred's three sons led international expansion: Louis (Paris, Rue de la Paix 1899), Pierre (New York, 653 Fifth Avenue 1917 - acquired from Morton Freeman Plant for $100 cash plus a $1 million pearl necklace), and Jacques (London, New Bond Street). Louis Cartier pioneered platinum use in jewellery, enabling finer invisible settings; designed the "Tutti Frutti" Art Deco jewels (polychrome gems in floral/fruit motifs); created the Santos wristwatch (1904, for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont - Cartier's first men's wristwatch) and the Tank watch (1919, inspired by WWI tank forms). A 1907 contract with Edmond Jaeger secured exclusive watch movement supply.
In 1933, Cartier patented the Mystery Setting ("invisible mount") - stone-setting in which metal disappears to show only gems - and Jeanne Toussaint became Director of Fine Jewellery (establishing the Panther motif as a house signature). The Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain was established in 1984, moving to a Jean Nouvel building in 1994. The brand joined Vendôme Luxury Group in 1993 (with Dunhill, Montblanc, Piaget, Baume & Mercier, Karl Lagerfeld, Chloé), which later became part of Richemont.
