Celine (formerly Céline) is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1945 by Céline Vipiana (1915-1997) and her husband Richard, initially as a made-to-measure children's shoe business at 52 rue Malte, Paris. The brand was recognised by its red elephant logo, created by Raymont Peynet. In 1960, the brand repositioned to ready-to-wear for high-society Parisian women, specialising in artisanal leather goods including handbags, loafers, gloves, and garments. The trench coat and Céline handbags became chief products of the house. Céline Vipiana remained the designer until her retirement in 1988. Celine was acquired by Moët Hennessy (LVMH) in 1996. Headquarters: 16 rue Vivienne, 2nd arrondissement of Paris (Hôtel Colbert de Torcy, classified as a French Historic Monument). CEO since April 2017: Séverine Merle. Creative director from 2025: Michael Rider (successor to Hedi Slimane, who departed October 2024).

The Phoebe Philo era (2008-2017) established Celine as the benchmark for Parisian intellectual minimalism: structured leather goods, clean lines, tonal palette. Hedi Slimane (2018-2024) pivoted to a rock-inflected aesthetic with a tighter graphic identity. Michael Rider (from 2025, previously at Ralph Lauren) signals a further shift. Celine presents at Paris Fashion Week.
Céline Vipiana's repositioning in 1960 established artisanal leather goods as the brand's commercial core. In 1964, the house launched the "Vent fou" fragrance and the "American Sulky" accessories collection. Throughout the 1960s, Celine became internationally recognised for leather quality, opening a leather goods boutique in Florence. In 1973, the logo was redesigned as the intertwined "C" Sulky canvas motif (referencing the Arc de Triomphe); boutiques opened in Monte Carlo, Geneva, Hong Kong, Lausanne, Toronto, and Beverly Hills.
Post-Vipiana creative directors include Michael Kors, followed by Ivana Omazic (who departed 2008). Phoebe Philo was appointed in 2008 and departed December 2017. Hedi Slimane was named Artistic, Creative and Image Director in January 2018. Slimane redesigned the logo - removing the accent (Céline → Celine), adopting all-caps, and stripping back the visual identity in a widely discussed redesign - and ramped up Celine's global retail store design. Slimane departed October 2024; Michael Rider succeeded him in 2025. Eyewear licensing: De Rigo (from May 2000), then Safilo (from November 2011). Fragrance licensing: Inter Parfums (from May 2000); Slimane-directed scents introduced from 2019.
LVMH subsidiary. HQ: 16 rue Vivienne, Paris. Six Paris boutiques as of November 2022; global network including New Zealand (exclusively at Faradays from 2023). Eyewear: Safilo (from 2011). Fragrance: Inter Parfums (from 2000).
Celine occupies the upper tier of the LVMH luxury portfolio alongside Louis Vuitton, Dior, Givenchy, and Loewe. The brand's commercial positioning centres on restrained French luxury: leather goods, RTW, and accessories in a minimalist aesthetic - first established by the Philo era (2008-2017), then redirected under Slimane (2018-2024). Global ambassador strategy encompasses K-pop figures (Park Bo-gum, BTS members, NewJeans' Danielle, TWS, Liu Shishi).
Celine's surface design contribution operates across two linked areas:
