Chopard (formally Le Petit-Fils de L.-U. Chopard & Cie S.A.) is a Swiss manufacturer and retailer of watches, jewellery, and accessories founded in 1860 by watchmaker Louis-Ulysse Chopard in Sonvilier, in the Swiss Jura. The Chopard family operated the company through three generations before Paul-André Chopard sold it in 1963 to Karl Scheufele III, a German goldsmith and watchmaker from Pforzheim - the Scheufele family has owned it since. Chopard relocated to Geneva in 1937, enabling certification of its movements with the Geneva Seal. By 2014 the company employed approximately 2,000 people (900 in Switzerland), operated ~100 stores globally, and recorded CHF 800m in annual sales. The company produces around 75,000 timepieces and 75,000 jewellery pieces each year and is a member of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH. The Fleurier manufacturing facility, established 1996, produces high-end in-house movements.
No named external creative director is documented in source material; design direction is led by the Scheufele family co-presidents. The brand's dual identity - watch manufacture rooted in Geneva and Fleurier precision, jewellery rooted in ethical fine stone and goldsmithing - produces two distinct surface design vocabularies. Watch design engages with the Haute Horlogerie tradition (movement finishing, case design, dial decoration). Jewellery design engages with the stone-setting and goldsmithing traditions of the Geneva and Pforzheim workshop heritage.
Louis-Ulysse Chopard founded his L.U.C. company in 1860 in Sonvilier having observed that marketing a finished watch was more profitable than making movements alone - establishing from the outset a commercially oriented approach to high-end watchmaking. After relocating to Geneva in 1937 and qualifying for the Geneva Seal, the company specialised in pocket watches and ladies' wristwatches, moving into men's sports watches and diamond jewellery in the 1980s. The 1976 launch of watches featuring free-floating diamonds behind sapphire crystal - the Happy Diamond concept - became the brand's signature decorative invention: a moving ornamental motif within the watch face itself. A full in-house movement manufacturing facility was established in Fleurier in 1996. Chopard co-presidents Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (children of the 1963 buyer) have led the modern brand. European Patent Office records list 20+ Chopard patents since 2002.
Watches (mechanical and complications; Happy Diamond collection; sports watches; Mille Miglia editions), jewellery (fine and high jewellery; Fairmined gold collections including Green Carpet Collection and Ice Cube Capsule), accessories, fragrance, eyewear, bags, and kidswear.
Approximately 100 stores worldwide as of 2010, including a Madison Avenue flagship in New York City. Retail distribution is through own boutiques and authorised dealers. Fairmined gold sourcing since 2013; WWF 2018 environmental assessment rated Chopard "Lower Midfield" for environmental performance. No licensing of the Chopard name to third-party manufacturers is documented in source material.
Chopard operates at the upper tier of Swiss luxury horology and fine jewellery. The brand's estimated sales of €550m in 2010 (of which €250m from watches) indicate a near-even split between watchmaking and jewellery - unusual in the Swiss luxury watch sector. Approximately 100 retail stores globally, a Mille Miglia motorsport partnership since 1988, and the Cannes Film Festival Trophée Chopard prize (since 1998) position the brand across both masculine (motor racing, horology) and feminine (cinema, jewellery) luxury segments. The Geneva Seal designation - applied only to movements made in Canton Geneva - is an important quality marker in the haute horlogerie tier.
Chopard's relevance to surface and decorative design is concentrated in jewellery and watch dial/case design:
