DKNY (Donna Karan New York) is a New York City-based fashion house, operating as the diffusion and secondary line of the Donna Karan brand. The parent company, Donna Karan International, was founded in 1984 by Donna Karan and her late husband Stephan Weiss with backing from Takihyo LLC (owner of Anne Klein, where Karan had worked for 15 years, including 10 as head designer). DKNY was founded in 1989 as a younger, more accessible line to complement the flagship Donna Karan New York label - initially targeting weekends and casual wear, priced at roughly half the main collection. Donna Karan International went public in 1996. LVMH acquired the company in 2001. Donna Karan left as chief designer in 2015 to focus on her Urban Zen brand. In 2016, LVMH sold both Donna Karan International and DKNY to G-III Apparel Group for $650 million.
Note: YAML parent_company "fossil-group" is incorrect - Fossil Group holds a DKNY watch licence; the brand is owned by G-III Apparel Group since 2016; YAML preserved as found.
DKNY's founding design direction was defined by the contemporary New York woman and the city-as-wardrobe concept. Donna Karan's "Seven Easy Pieces" (debuted fall 1985 for Donna Karan New York - interchangeable items working across day and evening) shaped DKNY's accessible take on the same editorial thinking. Current creative direction under G-III is not documented in the available source.
DKNY launched in 1989 as a diffusion line inspired by Donna Karan's daughter Gaby, targeting casual and weekend wear at accessible price points. Sub-brands include DKNY Jeans, DKNY Active, DKNY Underwear, DKNY Juniors, DKNY Kids, DKNY Pure, and DKNY Men (launched 1992; tailored suits, dress wear, casual wear, sportswear, shoes). Donna Karan Beauty (fragrances) launched 1992. Donna Karan Home (luxury bedding and accessories) and DKNY Home (contemporary and fashion-forward bedding) launched 2001.
In 2013, DKNY collaborated with Opening Ceremony to reissue select 1990s styles. HQ: 550 Seventh Avenue, Manhattan.
