Burberry Group plc is a British luxury fashion house founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and headquartered in London. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. Burberry is best known for the trench coat - developed from British military outerwear during the First World War - and for the Burberry Check, a camel, black, red, and white check pattern that became one of the most recognised branded surface patterns in the world. Gabardine fabric, invented by Thomas Burberry in 1879 (yarn waterproofed before weaving), underpins the brand's material heritage. After a period of brand overexposure and counterfeit proliferation (2001-2005), a deliberate luxury repositioning under CEO Angela Ahrendts and Creative Director Christopher Bailey reduced the check to 10% of products. As of FY2026, Burberry operates 410 stores globally; a cost-cutting programme and workforce reduction of up to 1,700 are ongoing under CEO Joshua Schulman (appointed July 2024).
Burberry's design has cycled through three distinct creative eras since 2001. Christopher Bailey (2001-2018) modernised the brand's British heritage references and established its digital leadership. Riccardo Tisci (2018-2022) introduced a darker, streetwear-adjacent aesthetic with the TB Monogram and Peter Saville-designed rebrand (2018). Daniel Lee (from September 2022), formerly of Bottega Veneta, revived the Equestrian Knight logo (February 2023) and repositioned the brand toward "a modern take on British luxury" - using distinctly British cultural figures (Shygirl, Skepta, Kano) as campaign faces. The current Schulman-era turnaround (from November 2024) refocuses commercial priorities on outerwear and core accessories, including a "scarf bar" retail format.
Gabardine: the brand's founding material innovation - waterproofed yarn before weaving produces a hardwearing, water-resistant, breathable fabric.
Burberry distributes through 410 owned and operated stores globally (FY2026), with online retail since 2006. The brand has a documented history of international licensing: 1970s agreements with Mitsui and others for manufacture of complementary goods; Japanese ready-to-wear licence with Sanyo-shokai (~€435M retail value, 2005); Spanish franchise (bought out as part of Ahrendts/Bailey repositioning, worth ~20% of group revenues). Post-2006, the brand deliberately bought back or wound down major licensing arrangements to restore brand control. Fragrance/beauty licences were taken in-house. As of the source, no major external licensing for surface pattern design outside Burberry's own retail is active. A circular fashion partnership with Vestiaire Collective launched October 2023 (exchange of second-hand Burberry goods for gift cards).
Burberry occupies the upper tier of the accessible luxury-to-luxury segment in British heritage fashion. Its most distinctive market position stems from the Burberry Check as a globally recognised branded surface pattern - a double-edged asset that drove both international licensing success (Japan: Sanyo-shokai, ~€435M retail value in 2005) and brand dilution risk (counterfeit proliferation, "chav" association, 2001-2005). The Ahrendts/Bailey repositioning (post-2006) deliberately restricted check exposure to restore exclusivity. Current CEO Joshua Schulman's turnaround (from late 2024) refocuses on core outerwear and trench coats and introduced a "scarf bar" retail concept. FY2026 results showed continued store rationalisation. A profit warning in July 2024 caused shares to fall 15%; a November 2024 cost-cutting plan raised shares 16%.
The Burberry Check is the defining surface design asset of the brand and one of the most studied examples of a branded pattern in fashion:
TB Monogram (2018-2023): interlocking T and B letters designed by graphic designer Peter Saville, introduced by Riccardo Tisci. An example of monogram-as-surface-pattern used across accessories.
Equestrian Knight logo (1901, trademarked 1909): revived in February 2023 under Daniel Lee; a heraldic brand mark with historical depth.
Gabardine: the brand's proprietary fabric innovation (1879) as a material surface treatment - a waterproofed, breathable woven fabric that defines the texture and hand of the trench coat.
